Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
