Rising Verbal Conflict Among Ethiopia and Eritrean Government Raises Fears of Armed Clash

Mounting concerns are present regarding the possibility of warfare among East African neighbours, Ethiopia and the Eritrean government, as hostile language has escalated in the last month.

What Has Ethiopia Stated?

Ethiopia's, being landlocked, requests for access to the sea coast through Eritrean territory has triggered a heated war of words.

The Ethiopian leader previously announced in the previous year that his government's sea access was an crucial concern, remarks that Eritrea dismissed.

Diplomatic connections between the neighboring nations have often been tense. Following a decades-long struggle for freedom, the Eritrean state, which has a 1,350km (840-mile) Red Sea coastline, legally broke away from Ethiopian rule in the early 1990s, making it without sea access.

Current Comments from Ethiopia's Government

The minister has dismissed Ethiopian requests for sea access describing it as "hazardous" and a "negative policy" of "territorial claims" – a strategy of retaking previous domains.

Eritrean authorities warned on 16 September that moves to legitimise "flagrant aggression" would have major implications for Ethiopia and its regional partners and is a "boundary that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Security Preparations on the Ground

So far, there are few indications of major military movements in the frontier regions between the neighboring states.

However, in the country, government media has displayed completion events of many recruits at different defense facilities.

The leader of staff section of the defense force, General Hachalu, commented lately in an interview that the army was in a "reliable position" as "many thousands of youths" were joining it, which he said was "a message to our opponents".

Past Origins of the Conflict

For decades from 1890, the territory was governed by Italian colonisers.

After the end of Italian rule, it was then managed by the British military before turning into a associated territory of Ethiopia.

However in 1962 Emperor Haile Selassie I terminated this system and the region became fully incorporated into Ethiopia.
